Project Support grants are non-recurring grants used to support arts organizations in providing activities that engage new audiences in the arts and contribute to the vibrancy and quality of life in Fairfax County. These grants will not fund operating expenses.

Art In Education

The Amadeus Concerts
for the project "Amadeus Side-by-Side Concerts"
Amadeus Side-by-Side Concerts are presented in Fairfax County elementary schools. First, student musicians from the school orchestra rehearse alongside the professional musicians of the Amadeus Orchestra. Next, the combined group performs for the entire school. Finally, the Amadeus Orchestra plays its own repertoire with the accompaniment of sights, sounds, and stories. A Side-by-Side Concert brings together students, teachers, administrators, parents, and professional musicians in an exciting event that showcases developing talent and opens young eyes and ears to the power of live orchestral music.

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts
for the project "STEM/STEAM Institute Programs in Fairfax County, VA"
The Wolf Trap Institute’s STEM/STEAM project addresses the national call for the increased study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the arts (STEM + the arts = STEAM) for young children.  The project will connect and correspond to math and science elements such as geometry, addition/subtraction, and measurement with the arts-based teaching method the institute has refined over 25 years.  The project includes a 5-day Summer Institute program for Teaching Artists and teachers, 12 Fall/Spring Residencies, and 2 Professional Development Workshops.

Voce Chamber Singers
for the project "Voce Chamber Singers presents US premiere with Cuban Composer and Pianist José Maria Vitier"
Voce Chamber Singers and Artistic Director, Dr. Ken Nafziger, have enjoyed a 10-year relationship with one of Cuba’s most celebrated composers and pianists, José Mariam Vitier and his wife, the lyricist Silvia Rodriguez Rivero.  In November 2010, José Maria Vitier and Silvia Rodriguez Rivero will travel to the United States for Voce to present the U.S. premiere of their Ave Maria por Cuba as well as perform their glorious Misa Cubana.  With the singers of Voce and a 14 piece chamber orchestra, the concerts will feature José Maria Vitier as guest pianist.

Theatre of the First Amendment
for the project "24,7,365"
Theatre of the First Amendment will fully produce the world premiere of “24, 7, 365” by local playwright Jennifer L. Nelson.  Developed in TFA’s 2009 First Light Discovery Program, this comedy asks “What would the world look like if people were happy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year?”  Educated African Americans’ attitudes about race, class, and social activism are put under a humorous microscope as two Washington couples endure a civilized weekend camping trip.  One night together complicates and ultimately illuminates their inner and outer lives.

Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts
for the project "Pen and Brush International: An Exhibition Featuring Painters and Poets from Runnymede, England and Northern Virginia"
“Pen and Brush International” is a unique exhibition featuring Painters and Poets from Runnymeade, England and Northern Viginia.  The combined works will be exhibited at ArtSpace Herndon from December 2010 through January 2011 and will then be shipped to Runnymeade, England for exhibition in May 2011.  The Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts is partnering with Poets Anonymous to create this collaboration.  Eight painters from Northern Virginia will be paired with eight poets from the U.K., and eight painters from the U.K. will be paired with eight poets from Northern Virginia.  Each pair will create a unique works to accompany one another.

Creative Cauldron
for the project "A Passport to the World: A Festival of Music, Dance, Art, and Story from Many Lands"
“A Passport to the World: A Festival of Music, Dance, Art and Story from Many Lands” will invite audiences of all ages to take a cross-cultural journey through performances, workshops, demonstration, and interactive events.  Six featured musical groups representing diverse musical traditions from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, will perform during residencies at ArtSpace Falls Church.  Teaching artists from Creative Cauldron will collaborate in the series through staged readings of traditional folktales and myths, and guest artists will provide educational demonstrations for children participating in Creative Cauldron’s summer camps and after school enrichment programs.

City of Fairfax Band Association
for the project "Spotlight on Virginians"
The City of Fairfax band is commissioning a new work for symphonic band composed by Travis J. Cross, a young and emerging Virginia artist.  The theme is Virginia and it will feature the history, traditions, and geography of the Shenandoah Valley.  Prior to the concert, there will be a meet the composer session where he will discuss the creative process of inspiration and musical composition.  The new work will be premiered by the City Band in April 2011.

Reston Community Orchestra
for the project "Brian Scarbrough composition commission"
The Reston Community Orchestra will commission a major new orchestral work young, local composer, Brian Scarborough.  The orchestra will perform the premier of this new work in its 2010-2011 season.  The performance will introduce an up and coming American composer, highlight the region’s diversity, and showcase the musical talent of the orchestra members.
