ArtSpace Herndon Photography Exhibit Opens January 23

Local photographers Catherine Powers and Michael Austin Kane join at the ArtSpace Herndon to display a powerful exhibit of diversity and discovery.  Powers has photographed U.S. 17 from Virginia to Florida capturing the character of the people, the culture and the beauty of the land that is America – off the Interstate.  Kane’s journey of discovery through photography reveals nature at its finest. The images reveal the artists’ deep commitment to their respective projects.

New Year's Eve Celebration at ArtSpace Herndon

ArtSpace HerndonArtSpace Herndon will again host a gala on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31, 2012, from 7 p.m.to 12:30 a.m. Historic Herndon’s traditional New Year’s Eve Celebration features family-friendly activities.

The family-friendly celebration begins inside the gallery at 7 p.m.   Melanie Stanley will tell her story about the last train leaving Herndon on the W&OD.  Local folk singer Bill Davis will tell his original tall tales in song.  Leslie’s hula hoops will astound young and old alike. Complimentary hot cocoa and cookies will be served inside the gallery.

Reston Arts Center Collector's Weekend

Greater Reston Arts CenterBeginning December 14 and continuing to December 16, the Greater Reston Arts Center will be celebrating the holidays with several events. The signature event will be the Collector's Choice Raffle on December 16 at 2pm. For this event food will be provided by Il Fornaio restaurant. All tickets purchased to attend the event enter the buyer into a raffle for a work of art valued more than the price of admission.

Christmas Cabin at Creative Cauldron

Set during the great potato famine, the tale follows the journey of a tinker's child who longs to one day have a home of her own. The years go by, and her dream would go unfulfilled if not for the wee people who come to her aid on a beautiful snowy night on a hillside in Carnaween. The Washington Post called it "poignant and bracing...a reminder of the season's rich ideals." Featuring live Irish music and a measure of Irish charm, "Christmas Cabin of Carnaween" is sure to warm the hardest of hearts this holiday season. The December 6th date is a pay-what-you-will preview. Tickets are $15, $12 for students/seniors.

Industrial StrengthThe Herndon Towne Square Singers will continue the celebration of their 30th year with encore performances of favorites songs from the past thirty years. The show will be called, "Decembers Past." Performances are Friday, November 30th, 7:30 pm; Saturday, December 1st, 7:30 pm; and Sunday, December 2nd at 2:00 pm. McLean Project for the Arts
Edges and Grids: Works by Greg Braun, Julia Bloom, Jeanne Heifetz, Steven Pearson and Nikki Painter
on display at the Emerson Gallery in McLean, Virginia.


Exhibit begins on November 29, 2012 and continues until January 5, 2013.


On November 29, 7 – 9 pm there will be an opening reception and gallery talk. This will be f
ree and open to the public.


Each of these artists create works that incorporate the edge or utilize the grid as either an underlying structure or a conceptual framework. Working in both two and three dimensional format, and trans- forming materials ranging from paint and wood to drywall, fabric, and sticks, these artists explore through painting, sculpture and installation the place where one thing ends and another begins.

Jazz Masters with John Eaton - November 3

Pianist, scholar and humorist John Eaton explores the career and life of American composer Cole Porter in this lecture/recital. Musical virtuosity and insightful commentary reveal the secrets of composer-lyricist porter's magic: Porter's songs, arising from their wonderful melodic foundation, combined with his incomparable lyrics, meld melancholy and joy. Eaton brings his unique interpretations to this amazing music with his performances of "Begin the Beguine," "Night and Day," "Anything Goes" and many more. Event is on Saturday, November 3 at 1 p.m at the Mclean Community Center's Alden Theatre. This is a lecture with musical examples, not a concert performance.

Hot Club of San Francisco - November 17 at McLean

At the Alden Theatre in Mclean, Hot Club of San Francisco will recreate the French Gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the Hot Club de France with original compositions and renditions of hot jazz classics. HCSF has a traditional Hot Club instrumentation of guitar, rhythm guitar (replacing drums), violin and upright bass.
