2006 Festival Performers
The 2006 International Children's Festival has invited
four international youth performing groups from South Korea, Hawaii,
Turkey and the Qatar. They will be joined on the Wolf Trap stage
by nationally known family entertainers such as the Grammy award
winning musical group Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer
and the New York Goofs, as well as local children's
performing groups.
Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and Friends
The 2006 Festival is pleased to announce the appearance
of Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and Friends on the Filene Center
stage each day at 2:15 p.m. This two-time Grammy-Award winning
musical duo will be joined on stage by their band and dancers for

New York Goofs
New York Goofs are America's premiere clown troupe
featuring founders Slappy and Monday. These elite New Age Vaudevillians
have a style that has been called "hilarious" and a kind
of "demented Ed Sullivan Show" by The New York Times.

2006 International Youth Performers
Hawaii
Returning to the Festival for the first time in five years by popular
demand is the group Halau Hula Olana from Aiea, Hawaii
on the island of Oahu. Expressing the beautiful Polynesian art of
Hawaiian dance, these children have won many awards in the competitive
Hawaiian competitions, and have traveled throughout the United States
to represent their culture. Performing in the traditional island
costume to the sounds of acoustical instruments such as the drum,
the dancers will take the audience away with them on a journey to
the pacific islands.
South Korea
The Festival is proud to welcome to the United States
for the first time a youth performing group from the city of Daegu,
Republic of Korea. The Gimcheon Youth Korean Traditional
Music Group will share the delightful traditional Korean
dances, music, and drumming. Their program presents exciting Korean
folk dances featuring beautiful costumes and exciting choreographed
drumming by the entire troupe.
Turkey
Joining the Festival for the first time will be a
group representing Turkey - the Harman Folklore Youth Club from
Istanbul, Turkey. Specializing in traditional Turkish dance and
music, this group has performed throughout Europe and Asia. The
children showcase the proud cultural heritage of a nation located
at an important crossroads in the world.
Qatar
From Doha, Qatar in the mid-east comes the Qatari
Children's Choir. Formed this past year just for the
Festival, this group of 40 young students will be making their first
trip to the United States. They will be proudly singing traditional
Qatari and regional music in their native dress.
2006 Local Performing Groups
Alliance Theatre: This
Fairfax-based children’s theater group will be performing
selections from the The Wizard of Oz. Performers age 7 and up.
Blaskapelle “Alte Kameraden” German Band:
This well known local German Band, part of the larger City of Fairfax
Band, will perform music in the traditional style of the old European
town bands in full costume.
Christina Heimlich Dancers: A festival
tradition, the Christina Heimlich Dancers from the International
School of Dance will perform selections from their repertoire. Bill
Heimlich is a former President of the Arts Council of Fairfax County
and he and Christina were among the founders of the Festival.
East of the River Police Boys and Girls Steelband:
Young musicians from Washington, D.C. will be performing the unique
sounds and songs of the steel drum bands, providing the Festival
with a tropical spirit.
Encore! Studio of Dance: Students at
this school study the spectrum of American dance culture. They will
be performing a selection of jazz, tap, modern and contemporary
dance, an exciting representation of America.
LM Project: This group of young modern
and jazz dancers from New York will bring to the Festival a flavor
of Broadway - direct from the New York stage.
The Park Sisters: Frances and Ginger
Park are local children’s authors who will read to audiences
from their award-winning books about Korean-American life.
Rhythmaya School of Dance: These kids,
ages 5-13, will be performing the beautiful dances of India.
Rich Potter and Friends: A graduate of
the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Rich
will be joined by his friends in entertaining the crowds around
the park.
Roomjhoom Nrityalaya: At this school,
kids learn all varieties of Indian dance, from traditional to classical
to folk. These kids, ages 8-14, will be performing two classical
Indian dances: the Kathak and Bharatnatyam.
Shivani Saboo: This performance is a
fun and colorful way for children to learn about India’s cultural
traditions through dance. Includes audience participation.
Tobas Dinastia: With intricate costumes
and energetic music, these kids, ages 4-24, will be performing traditional
dances of Bolivia.
Traveling Players Ensemble: In the tradition
of the traveling theater troupes of the middle ages, these teens
will be performing a production of the French playwright Moliere’s
Scapin.
Virginia Ballet Company: This Virginian
institution has been training children in classical ballet for over
50 years. These kids will be performing Snow White and Friends.
World Children’s Choir: These young
students, who come from every type of cultural diversity in the
Washington D.C. area, will perform Humperdinck’s famous children’s
opera – Hansel and Gretel.
